Frequently Asked
Questions

Our FAQ section breaks down everything from lock types to tracking systems, helping you understand what’s best for your van, tools and budget. Whether you want to know how to stop thieves in their tracks or how our mobile fitting works, you’ll find clear, honest answers straight from the experts who design and install the systems every day.

Do I need to protect the van doors with latch shields if I already have deadlocks?

Yes. Deadlocks provide an additional locking point on the door, but only work when they are locked. The most common type of attack by thieves, is to drill the door and attack the original door mechanism/latch. If you protect the original latch with shields inside, or outside the door (or both), you have an additional layer of protection 24 hours a day, even when deadlocks aren’t locked. We recommend multiple layers of security for effective tool theft prevention.

How long does a VanSecure professional installation take?

Professional installation typically takes 1-4 hours, depending on the complexity of the security system and van model. Our technicians work efficiently at your location, to minimise downtime.

What kind of guarantee do you offer on your installations?

VanSecure offers a full parts and labour warranty on all installations, ensuring your security system remains reliable and effective. The warranty length varies dependent on the type of equipment fitted, ranging from 1 to 5 years.

Which VanSecure security products are best for my van?

The best products depend on your van model and specific needs. Our experts are here to discuss your situation, understand your requirements and recommend the most suitable security measures to ensure complete protection.

What is the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) and how does it affect my fleet?

The DVS is a Transport for London (TfL) safety regulation requiring HGVs over 12 tonnes to have a minimum 3-star rating by October 2024, improving drivers’ direct visibility of vulnerable road users.

Can you install while I’m working?

Yes. Our mobile team can meet you on site and carry out installation without disrupting your day.

Can these systems help with insurance claims?

Yes. Many products are insurance rated, for example our hook locks are ‘Sold Secure Automotive Gold’ Approved. Our camera systems can also help prove fault in the event of accidents, or identify thieves should your van be targeted.

What’s the best way to prevent a van break-in?

Fit as much security as you can afford. Consider where you park, if you can park close to a wall or fence so it’s hard to get to your doors. Don’t leave anything expensive on show in the cab, and try to park in a well lit and busy area. Thieves will look at your van and try to work out how much time and effort they will need to get in. The higher risk for them, the less likely they will try.

Can dash cam footage help with insurance claims?

Yes. High-quality dash cam footage is often the difference between a successful claim and a partial-blame payout. It can also be crucial for police reports and claim evidence. A visible camera also acts as a strong visual deterrent to would-be thieves or vandals.

Do I need more than just locks?

The best defence is a combination of many layers of security. Think of it like a thief is running a gauntlet; the more barriers that stand in the way, the less likely they are to get through. Hook Deadlocks are subtle but effective, door shielding can be on show to deter, or hidden to keep your van looking sharp. Camera systems can be a further deterrent, and provide evidence to the authorities should anything untoward occur. One layer isn’t enough anymore, thieves are too fast for that.

Is van security really worth the investment?

Absolutely. After a break in, the cost to you isn’t just the tools that have gone. You have time off the road, lost earnings, van repair costs, and probably an increase in insurance premium. The cost to you does not stop there. Thieves will often target the same van 3 months later in the hope that tools have been replaced and the security not improved. The cost of replacing stolen tools or dealing with the aftermath runs into the thousands. A one-time investment in proper security can prevent that, and protect your business long-term.

What’s the difference between tracking and dash cams?

Tracking allows you see where the van is in real time. You can access location history, get alerted when the van idles for a set amount of time, or get alerted when it arrives or leaves a specific location. Dash cams record video around the vehicle, while driving and will record snapshots if the van is damaged when parked. Many dash cams also have an integrated tracker or cost-effective monitoring. The best security includes both.

Can I access footage remotely?

Yes. Our live view camera systems offer access via a SIM card, so you can check in 24 hours a day (when in a 3G/4G coverage area).

Do you install the tracking system or send it out?

We can do either. For simple vehicle tracking, we can send a 2-wire tracker for you to fit to the vehicle battery. For other systems, we recommend a professional installation to ensure reliability.

Is this only for big companies with many vans?

Not at all. Many of our customers are sole traders with a single van. Monitoring matters whether you’ve got one vehicle or one hundred.
